EU is drawing up plans for imposing a ban on imports of Russian coal, which could be part of slew of sanctions, writes Bloomberg News citing unnamed sources.

The plan comes in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the numerous reported acts of war crimes committed in the country, the media writes.

France is prepared to take things a step further and impose sanctions on both oil and coal ex-Russia, stated French Minister of Finance Bruno Le Maire ahead of a meeting in the European Commission. For now, however, the EU on a whole is exercising restraint on taking such action, given that several nations are reluctant to impose sanctions against the Russian energy sector.

This is due to EU member nations’ reliance on Russian energy sources.

An EU ban against coal would require support from all member nations.

It is unclear when a potential ban would enter into force.
