A gas plant located in western Russia near the Finnish border is flaring off natural gas worth millions, writes British media BBC.

According to an analysis drawn up by Norwegian analyst firm Rysted Energy, approximately 4.34 million cubic meters of gas, valued at approximately USD 10m, is flared off at the site every day.

Normally, the gas would have been exported to Germany.

Germany’s Ambassador to the UK, Miguel Berger, tells the BBC that Russia is flaring off the gas because the war in Ukraine has left the nation with no one else to sell to.

”They don’t have any other places where they can sell their gas, so they have to burn it,” the ambassador remarks.

The plant is located north-west of Saint Petersburg.

The gas flaring is carried out at a time when many parts of Europe are struggling with soaring energy prices.

Typically, such flaring occurs for technical or safety reasons.

However, the scale of the flaring in Russia is surprising.

”I’ve never seen an LNG plant flare so much,” says Jessica McCarthy, an expert on satellite data at Miami University, to the BBC.

A tall flame at the natural gas plant can be seen from afar.
