French natural gas stockpiles are almost completely full ahead of winter, Reuters reports French energy authorities as saying.

Many European countries have been trying to fill gas inventories in preparation for the cold season and as part of efforts to become as independent as possible on Russia’s fuel.

Lobby group Gas Infrastructure Europe’s (GIE) report from Monday this week showed the EU’s stockpiles to be nearly 90% full.

Belgium and Portugal have reportedly also achieved near full refilling.

Danish, Polish and British stockpiles are said to be more than 95% full.

Hungary, Bulgaria and Latvia, GIE finds, are the continent’s nations with the least gas on store, with all three having filled inventories to less than 80%.

Meanwhile, Gazprom has resumed gas supply to Italy after resolving regulatory issues with Austria as the relevant transit nation.

The Russian state-owned gas company halted supply via Austria over the weekend due to domestic system operators being unwilling to allow the warring nation’s fuel flow through their pipeline, the news agency writes.

”The Austrian operator said about its readiness to confirm the transport nominations of LLC Gazprom Export, which allows resuming Russian gas supplies through Austria,” Gazprom says in a statement.

Whereas Russia once accounted for roughly 40% of Italy’s gas import, that level has been reduced to roughly 10%, Reuters reports.

The southern European country has instead sourced gas from Algeria and Nordic countries, according to the news agency.
