On Tuesday, partners behind the Hammerfest LNG plant presented a new development plan to the Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, writes Equinor in a statement.

Partners will invest NOK 13.2bn (USD 1.9bn) in the project for onshore electrification of the facility and installation of gas compression, which will partake in maintaining high gas exports after 2030.

The project is meant to strengthen Norway’s position as a ”reliable and long-term supplier of LNG to Europe,” states Geir Tungesvik, Equinor’s executive vice president for Projects, Drilling & Procurement, adding:

”Electrification will allow us to deliver this gas with close to zero greenhouse gas emissions from production. The project will secure long-term operations and gas exports from Melkøya towards 2050.”

Hammerfest LNG’s basic production capacity lies at 18.4 million standard cubic meters of gas per day, equivalent to 6.5 billion cubic meters per year.

More specifically, electrification entails that current gas turbine generators will be replaced with power from shore.

The development is expected to prolong the operation phase by ten years and also maintain employment levels.
