Nord Stream 2 mandate divides EU nations

At least 13 of the 28 member countries want the EU to take over negotiations with Russia concerning the gas pipeline. There is no role for the Commission, says Merkel.

The European Union seems to be divided down the middle when it comes to Nord Stream 2.

The union's ministers gathered Monday in Brussels where they discussed the controversial expansion of the gas pipeline between Russian port city Vyborg and Greifswald in Germany at an informal meeting. Around half of the 28 nations argued that the Commission should take over negotiations with Russia.
