US Secretary of State repeats Nord Stream 2 criticism

This pipeline could potentially undermine Russia's neighboring countries, said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at a Tuesday meeting with NATO's Secretary-General.

When US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday, the former removed any doubts concerning his country's opposition to Nord Stream 2.

US President Joe Biden views the Russian-German project as a bad idea for both the US and Europe, stated Blinken, according to media Euractiv.

"It has the potential to undermine the interests of Ukraine, Poland and a number of close partners and allies," said the Secretary of State.

The gas pipeline was originally scheduled to be operational a couple of years ago, but US sanctions against a series of participating companies have delayed its establishment. Now, project company Nord Stream 2 AG is working towards building the part of the pipeline which passes by the Baltic Sea island Bornholm in Danish territorial waters.

The US authorities have often argued that Nord Stream 2 will put too much power over the European energy supply chain in the hands of Russia. Furthermore, the US also has interests in exporting natural gas to Europe, for which reason this nation is, in a sense, in direct competition with gas-exporting Russia.

Notes from the Danish Maritime Authority recently showed that Nord Stream 2 AG plans to complete the part of the pipeline which will be in Danish waters before October this year.
