Biden shift brings Nord Stream 2 closer, but hurdles remain

After issuing a waiver this week, effectively lifting sanctions against the company tasked with completing the controversial pipeline, the US now seems to have changed its position to not strain ties with Germany. The project is now projected to reach completion this year – but some opposition still remains.

A natural gas pipeline linking Russia and Germany edged closer to completion after the Biden administration loosened sanctions of the controversial project, but significant hurdles remain before the fuel can start flowing under the Baltic Sea.
