Danish Energy Agency seeks alternative sites for muddy offshore wind farm

As the market is invited to provide bids as to whether offshore wind farm Hesselø can be achieved at all in its current form, the Danish Energy Agency screens for alternatives across the country.

Everyone makes mistakes, as is well known. When consultancy Cowi in 2018 presented its fine-grained screening of marine areas for Danish offshore wind farms, the area known as Hesselø B was ranked the highest – very well suited – measured in terms of seabed conditions. Upon closer inspection, however, approximately half of the area designated for the project was so muddy that wind turbine foundations would risk having to be installed 55-60 meters below sea level in order to hold.
