The four Dutch parties that settled on a government coalition agreement earlier this week have reached a big spending agreement entailing around EUR 60bn earmarked for climate change mitigation efforts for the coming ten years.

Money will used to, for instance, decarbonize energy and make domestic agriculture more sustainable, according to the coalition agreement presented Wednesday.

The incoming government's energy plans include building two new nuclear power plants.

The four parties also vow to rectify the country's housing shortage by building 100,000 new apartments.

A minimum wage increase is also on the table as a part of improving social issues.

At Wednesday's presentation of the coalition deal in The Haag, serving Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte calls the outcome a "beautiful result," adding that the new government wants to establish a basis for handling big problems.

Thursday, Dutch Parliament is set to formerly empower Rutte to form a government.

The Netherlands has been without a government for nine months as the four parties – Rutte's liberal VVD, the centrist D66, the Christian Democratic CDA and the Christian Union (CU) – have negotiated a coalition since the general election in March.

The same parties have governed since 2017.

Rutte will be leading the fourth consecutive government and has served as the country's prime minister since 2010.
