Denmark ranks among the nations with the highest ambitions for the offshore wind industry. This could pave the way for strengthened co-operation with Germany on climate.

In Berlin on Wednesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen say that they share a common wish to strengthen climate cooperation.

"We've talked about offshore wind energy on which we wish to intensify cooperation. We have common ambitions on climate and as neighbors we share the same ideas about future technologies," says Scholz.

However, he doesn't go into detail on the nature of the collaboration, but from an industrial point of view, the statement could be interpreted as an opening for increased exports of offshore wind turbines.

Germany is facing significant energy demands after Scholz' predecessor, Angela Merkel, decided to dismantle its nuclear power industry.

Since then, the Ukraine crisis has demonstrated Germany's dependence on Russian gas, which is accompanied by a myriad of dilemmas.

Mette Frederiksen also sees opportunities for closer cooperation between Denmark and Germany. During the press conference in Berlin, she says:

"I'm pleased to see that we have a new German government that has set high climate goals. It's important for Europe that one of the great nations is joining the fight for the climate."

She also highlights renewables as an obvious area of cooperation.

"I also find that there are exciting ideas about forming a climate club for the most ambitious nations in the world. From a Danish point of view, it's evident that our very high target of a 70-percent reduction in CO2 emissions as early as 2030, we're very much willing to take part in these efforts," says Frederiksen.

The German Chancellor heads a coalition consisting of the Social Democratic Party, the Free Democratic Party and the Greens. The involvement of the green party has helped steer the German government's policy in a more green direction.
