French households and companies’ energy conservation measures and milder temperatures have resulted in a 8.5% drop in power consumption, reports Reuters citing data from French transmission system operator RTE.
Switching off the lights and turning down the heat to avoid power outages and gas scarcity during the winter has paid off.
”Today, most of the risks are behind us,” says RTE head Xavier Piechaczyk, according to Reuters.
However, he notes that if the second half of February comes with a cold snap, it could lead to certain challenges.
The French government has set a target to bring down energy consumption by 10% by 2024 from 2019 levels.
