A new informal agreement between the EU Parliament and the EU Council aims to avert a gas supply crisis among member countries. The two institutions have negotiated a new set of common rules for gas supply regulation, which are now pending formal endorsement, according to a press release from the EU Parliament.
"The main objective of the Parliament was to ensure that our citizens are never left without gas. This is reflected in the compromise which we have just reached. Through the solidarity mechanism, member states are obliged to help each other when there is a danger to the supply of gas to the most sensitive consumers – private households, hospitals, social services," said rapporteur Jerzy Buzek in the press release.
