El Salvador now has active wind power in its energy mix now that the country's first wind farm is fully commissioned as of today, Wednesday.

The 54MW Ventus Wind Project is located in the Municipality of Metapán and consists of 15 Vestas turbines of the model V136-3.6.

Initially meant to commission in the third quarter of 2020, several delays caused by the pandemic have resulted in postponed commissioning.

"We are really proud to pioneer wind energy in El Salvador together with Ventus and Tracia Network Corporation. This new milestone allows us to extend Vestas' global footprint and reinforce our presence in Central America, while we continue supporting Latin America's transition to renewables," writes Agustín Sánchez Tembleque, Vestas vice president of sales for region LATAM North.

El Salvador has plans to add more wind power to reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels, to ensure more stable electricity prices as well as diversify the national energy mix.
