Wind OEMs: Largest turbine rivalry approaches zenith

The race to offer the largest wind turbine could end up damaging the industry, say several big market players at Wind Energy Denmark's annual conference. Subsuppliers hold the key to forcing standardization.

Since 2000, the size of wind turbine manufacturers' state-of-the-art models has grown from 2MW to Vestas' coming giant offshore platform of 15MW, set to enter serial production in 2024. That corresponds to a doubling every ten years – an exponential growth rate that few thought would persist as long as it has. Now, however, the trend could be coming to an end.
