The ’for sale’ sign has been taken off Maersk Supply Service, notes Maersk Chief Executive Søren Skou at a press conference.

”Maersk Supply Service isn’t currently for sale,” he says.

The company doesn’t directly fit into the company’s strategy, which revolves around servicing the entire supply chain for freight customers. As a result, the company has continuously been viewed as a potential target for divestment.

”We tried selling Maersk Supply Service back in 2016 as part of selling off the energy business. We couldn’t do that because a large number of vessels – a third or half – were laid up,” says Skou.

The message that the company could face divestment has been reiterated on a regular basis, but that has now changed in the short term. However, the company could end up being divested eventually.

At the same time, Maersk has worked to transform the business so the vessels are able to service the wind turbine division.

In that connection, Maersk Supply Service has placed an order for a new vessel for setting up wind turbines on behalf of Empire Offshore Wind, a joint venture between Equinor and BP. The turbines will be used for wind projects Empire 1 and Empire 2 off the coast of Long Island in the US.

Work on the new type of vessel is planned to start in the fourth quarter of 2022 for delivery in 2025.
