RWE has joined forces with Spanish infrastructure and mobility company Ferrovial to pursue offshore wind developments along the Spanish coast.

The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to shape the terms for a final deal, according to a press release.

RWE already has a long-established renewables business in Spain of approx. 490MW in onshore wind, 90MWac of solar capacity and more than 150MW in development.

Last year, the German utility invested EUR 40m in a 43MW wind farm.

”Spain has been an important core market for RWE to grow our solar and onshore business for many years. Now we are excited to go one step further,” says Chief Executive Officer of RWE Offshore Wind:

”Floating offshore wind is key to meeting the increasing demand for renewable power in Europe, delivering sustainability solutions, supporting local industries and creating new, future-proof jobs.”

The partnership with Ferrovial comes as a natural next step given that the company was in charge of constructing the platform for RWE’s floating unit DemoSATH, currently being tested and expected to be installed later this year.

Ferrovial has submitted expressions of interest concerning four wind farms off the Spanish coast with installed capacity of 1,750MW.
