Order intake for global wind turbine manufacturers in 2023 was a record 155 gigawatts, up 16 gigawatts from the previous year, according to a new report from consultancy Wood Mackenzie.

The vast majority of the orders were placed in China, and Chinese Envision had the largest market share - ahead of Danish Vestas.

According to the way Wood Mackenzie counts orders, Envision had an order intake of 22GW. Vestas followed with 19GW, while Chinese Goldwind was number three with 18GW. Looking at the fourth quarter alone, Vestas took the most orders - 8GW led by 5GW in the US.

In China, the order intake last year was a record-high 100GW. Western markets also set an order record with 55GW, of which Europe accounted for 19GW and North America for 17GW.

”A record order intake outside of China in the fourth quarter and a near doubling of order capacity in North America in 2023 helped continue the recovery in Western markets, with order intake up 26% year-on-year,” says Luke Lewandowski, vice president of Global Renewables Research at Wood Mackenzie.
