UK-based SSE Renewables has announced the main contractor and battery supplier for its largest battery storage project to date, the the 320MW project in Monk Fryston, North Yorkshire.

Morrison Energy Services, part of M Group Services’ Energy Division, has been awarded the role of main contractor, while Sungrow, which has previously worked with SSE Renewables on the nearby Ferrybridge project, will supply the battery system for the energy storage.

SSE Renewables made the final investment decision for the project back in November 2023 and the plant is scheduled to start up in late 2025. Once up and running, it will be one of the country’s largest battery storage systems, capable of powering over half a million UK homes for up to two hours at a time.

Managing Director Director of Morrison Energy Services, Donnie Whyte, says in the announcement that he is looking forward to working with SSE Renewables and Sungrow on what he describes as ”a flagship project in battery storage.”

”Projects like our battery storage facility at Monk Fryston are crucial in reaching the UK’s net zero goals and being able to harness the abundance of energy generated from our existing renewables portfolio,” said Richard Cave-Bigley, Director of Solar and Battery at SSE Renewables.
