Ørsted inaugurates offshore wind farms in Taiwan
Ørsted has inaugurated two major Taiwanese offshore wind farms on Thursday, making them the largest of their kind in the Asia-Pacific region, the Danish company states in a press release.
The two farms, Greater Changhua 1 and 2a, are now up and running and with a combined capacity of 900 megawatts (MW) they have doubled Taiwan’s offshore wind capacity.
”Greater Changhua 1 and 2a is a flagship project of historic significance. The project has spearheaded the establishment of the local offshore wind industry and has contributed significantly to Taiwan’s energy transition and net-zero target,” says Per Mejnert Kristensen, Ørsted’s head of Asia-Pacific.
Work on the projects began in March 2021. The larger of the two, the 605.2MW Greater Changhua 1, is half owned by Ørsted. The remaining half is owned by a global investor group and Cathay PE.
Ørsted owns 100% of Greater Changhua 2a, which has a capacity of 294.8MW.
The two wind farms are part of Ørsted’s overall Greater Changhua project. It further consists of Greater Changhua 2b, Greater Changhua 3, and Greater Changhua 4, which will have a total capacity of 2.4 gigawatts.
Ørsted is currently constructing Greater Changhua 2b and 4.
