The world's largest offshore wind project has been cancelled. The Swedish government has decided that the offshore wind farm Blekinge Offshore, which is scaled to consist of 500-700 wind turbines with a total capacity of 2.5 GW, will not be approved after all. This is according to the Swedish Minister for the Environment, Karolina Skog, from Miljöpartiet (The Environmental Party).
The reason for the cancellation is somewhat unusual, and is neither because the turbines pose a threat to local bird populations or obscure prominent estate views. Rather, the decision was based on a potential threat to Swedish national security.
