When wind projects took home the entire 3 GW on offer in Spain's first technology neutral tender, the solar power industry claimed there was an uneven playing field. Meanwhile, the wind industry complained when the Spanish authorities adjusted the conditions for a second tender of a further 3 GW, introduced shortly thereafter. However, now it seems that Spain has found a surprising way to appease both sides.
In the second tender, projects were awarded for 5,037 MW instead of just 3 GW. And while 3,909 MW went to solar projects, the remaining 1.128 MW were won by wind. This means that across both technology neutral tenders, solar and wind have received a close-to even amount of capacity, with around 4 GW each.
