Danish government shows little faith in own offshore wind farms

Only 4 out of 13GW of offshore wind from the upcoming tenders are included in the climate outlook, as it’s estimated that the rest are not yet profitable. The industry must now assess the potential.
Danish offshore wind turbines are gradually fading away - especially in eastern Denmark, where the authorities do not consider some of their projects to be profitable. Turbines from the latest wind farm, Kriegers Flak from 2021 are pictured here. | Photo: Marcus Emil Christensen

It is a well-documented fact that the economics of the Energy Island on Bornholm are challenged. But this is apparently also true for two of the other projects, Hesselø and Kriegers Flak II, which the Danish government expects to be constructed in 2029 and 2030 despite several delays. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities considers these projects so improbable that they have been written out of the central trajectory in the upcoming Danish Climate Status and Outlook (KF24).
