Siemens Energy secures EUR 100m for PtX project

Siemens Energy is to lead project H2Mare, which has just received more than EUR 100m in subsidy from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The project involves a total 35 partners, which cover the whole value chain from wind energy generation and hydrogen production to conversion of the hydrogen to methanol or ammonia.
The idea of the four-year project is for offshore wind turbines with integrated electrolyzers to produce green hydrogen directly on an industrial scale, saving costs related to the power grid. In the second phase of the project, the green hydrogen will be used to produce biofuels.
"We are bringing in our offshore wind and electrification capabilities as well as our expertise in electrolysis," says Siemens Energy Chief Executive CHristian Bruch:
"H2Mare unites the strengths of research and industry – for sustainable decarbonization of the economy and to the benefit of the environment. We need the support of politics to drive forward innovative solutions for a green hydrogen economy."
In total, H2Mare encompasses four projects that, besides direct electrolysis and conversion from hydrogen to biofuel, include development of an electrolysis system adapted to marine environments as well as knowledge sharing with the public and across projects.
Germany has designated three major hydrogen projects that will ensure the country's development of the hydrogen field. The three projects were selected based on an idea competition dubbed the "Hydrogen Republic of Germany", which the research ministry initiated in the summer of 2020.
The competition saw 32 projects submitted. Aside from H2Mare, the two other projects are H2Giga, which will produce electrolysis units, and Transhyde, which will developed high-pressure containers and pipes for hydrogen.
In total, more than 240 different partners in research and industry will work together on the three projects, which will receive a combined up to EUR 740m in support.
